L’homme est depuis
longtemps lié à la machine dans sa soif de découverte et
d’exploration de la planète. Incontestablement, les fondements de
notre civilisation et notre connaissance du monde reposent sur les
vertus de véhicules à moteur que la plupart d’entre nous utilisent
de façon quotidienne.
Néanmoins, il est un fait certain aujourd’hui, que notre
comportement à l’égard de la planète doit changer si nous espérons
pouvoir préserver et transmettre son patrimoine naturel aux
générations futures.
POLARIS VOYAGE souhaite participer à cet élan, que nous espérons
universel, pour protéger l’environnement. Arpenter les territoires
du monde en quad ou en motoneige pourrait sembler contradictoire
avec cette philosophie. Il n’en est rien ! Au delà des stéréotypes,
l’esprit de POLARIS VOYAGE est nourrit d’un profond respect pour la
nature et nous savons que les conséquences de nos actes sur
l’environnement sont bien plus le fait du comportement humain que de
la machine diabolisée par l’inconscient collectif.
C’est pour canaliser et éduquer ce comportement individuel, outre
une sélection rigoureuse des prestataires et leurs équipements, que
POLARIS VOYAGES a souhaité rédiger et diffuser à chaque étape de son

Rules of snowmobiling in Finland
A skidoo is a vehicle used with some special traffic rules. We have
gathered a set of advice for you to ensure a successful snowmobiling
trip.
Snowmobiling in Finland is first and foremost about being in the
nature and surviving in the harsh conditions. You might end up being
the helper as well as in need of help. Make sure you know how to
handle your vehicle as well as take care of proper equipment and
dressing, orienteering skills and knowledge about moving around in
Finnish nature.
Good preparations
Get to know your skidoo and check on your equipment. Make sure you
are prepared for changes in the weather and snow conditions as well
as helping others, if needed. If you have been drinking, you won't
be driving - that's the law! The official limit is 0,5 — we
recommend a zero!
Stay on tracks
Use only marked snowmobiling routes for driving on a skidoo. If you
wish to go through somebody else's land, you need to get a
permission from the land owner. Keep your group together and take
care of the ones behind you. Make sure you know how to read a map
and use it! Let someone know about the time you should be back and
the route you're taking. Let them also know, how they should be able
to get in touch with you.
Leave no trace apart of your tracks on the marked trails
Take care of the trash and make as little noise as possible. Have
respect on wildlife.
Be prepared to help
Keep an eye on the surroundings, let the others know what you're up
to. Make sure you can help and get help if needed. Whenever trying
to help someone, secure yourself first. Keeping up some survival
skills is highly recommended!
Adjust your speed to the conditions
Chose your speed according to the terrain and snow conditions. Don't
let yourself be surprised by the terrain! Slow down to see the
rocks, trees and bumps in time. Ice cover is not a race track and
skidoo is not a floating vehicle! Half of the skidoo accident
victims drown in Finland yearly. Remember again: if you drink, you
won't be driving!
Become a better skidoo driver
Practice driving a skidoo in a safe environment.
You have to be 15 years old to be able to drive a skidoo anywhere.
If you are driving on a marked route or other roads or crossing a
road, you need to have a driver's license (i.e. in Finland you need
to be over 18). You will need a permission from the land owner when
riving on someone else's land. Metsähallitus (Finnish Forestry)
gives permissions to government land. You are not allowed to use a
skidoo on public roads on anything else but crossing over the road
or a bridge.
The speed limit in the woods is 60 km/h and on ice cover (on top of
water) 80 km/h. If a skidoo is pulling a sleigh with people in it,
the speed limit is 40 km/h.
A helmet is the most important safety device and thus mandatory for
the driver as well as for a passenger, unless he/she is travelling
in a sleigh covered with safety |
